WAREHAM, Mass. – Six strikeouts in five innings of work by Craig Schlitter (Bryant) earns him his third win of the summer as the Commodores edge the Gatemen 2-1 in the first game of the double header this Tuesday evening.
The Gatemen took the first lead of the game early in the third as the Gatemen’s left fielder Tino Lipson (California Davis) scored off an error by Leon Byrd Jr. (Rice) as the ball took an unlucky hop over Byrd’s glove.
However, Falmouth countered in the fourth as Casey Gillaspie (Wichita State) started off the side with a stand up double to center. Conner Hale (State College of Florida Manatee-Sarasota) brought in Gillaspie with a big, two out single to tie the game at one apiece.
In the fifth, an error by the Gatemen’s catcher scored the game-winning run for the Commodores. Joe Maggi (Arizona) started the offensive drive with a single to shortstop, and then advanced to second as Byrd sac bunted to put Maggi in better scoring position. Kevin Newman (Arizona) followed with a single to put runners at the corners for the hot hitter, Rhys Hoskins (Sacramento State). Hoskins flew out to left for the second out of the inning, but Maggi tagged up at third and was able to score the game winner, as the catcher could not grab the high throw at plate.
Donny Murray (Holy Cross) got the save coming in for relief in the sixth. Murray kept the Gatemen hitless over his two innings on the mound. He walked one and had one strikeout to conclude the first game of the double header.
