The Commodores suffered a loss to the Harbor Hawks earlier this evening, making their previous three-game winning streak seem like a distant memory. Although they fell drastically behind, in two of the later innings the Commodores managed to keep the score close. In the end, they lost to the Harbor Hawks 11-8.

Starting on the mound for Falmouth was Kevin McCanna (Rice), who was credited with the loss. McCanna pitched five and two thirds innings, and did not record any strikeouts. On the mound for Hyannis was Marc Brakeman (Stanford). Brakeman struck out six Commodores batters in five innings.

Hyannis appeared determined to redeem themselves after their previous matchup against Falmouth, where they fell 14-3 on the Commodores’ home field four nights prior. The Harbor Hawks responded tonight with 14 hits and only one strikeout at the plate. Their pitching had improved since the two teams’ last meeting, totaling nine strikeouts and one base on balls.

Falmouth struck first in the top of the first, keeping with their habit of scoring runs in the early innings of the game. Two consecutive infield singles to short allowed Steven Duggar (Clemson) and Kevin Newman (Arizona) to reach base. Continuing his outstanding performance from the night before against Cotuit, Conner Hale (Louisiana State) knocked an RBI single to shallow left to score Duggar. The Commodores led 1-0.

Hyannis responded immediately in the bottom of the first, as Dylan Bosheers (Tennessee Tech) drilled a RBI double to deep center to score a runner from second. Hyannis broke the 1-1 tie in the bottom of the third when Daniel Kihle (Wichita State) advanced home through Austin Slater’s (Stanford) sacrifice fly to center field. Donnie Dewees Jr. (North Florida) stole home to give the Harbor Hawks a 3-1 lead.

The Commodores closed the gap in the next inning, scoring two runs off four straight hits at the plate. Jake Madsen (Ohio) earned a RBI single as Cameron O’Brien (West Virginia) advanced home from second. Sam Gillikin (Auburn) stepped to the plate and drove a RBI single to shallow left field, scoring Boomer White (Texas Christian) from second. The score read 3-3.

Hyannis kicked their play into high gear in the bottom of the sixth, scoring four runs. Ben Deluzio (Florida State) singled to deep left field, and managed to advance to third as left fielder Boomer White fumbled the ball for a fielding error. This error allowed Bosheers to score, giving Hyannis the 4-3 lead. Carl Wise (Charleston) earned a RBI single as DeLuzio crossed home after his poke to right field. Kihle brought Wise home through a sailing single to left-center, and Kihle reached home after a single to left field by Slater. This slew of hits put the Harbor Hawks ahead 7-3 heading to the seventh inning.

The Commodores responded optimistically as Duggar grounded a speeding RBI single between first and second to bring Gillikin home from second. The score read 7-4. Newman wasted no time in attempting to close the three run deficit, knocking an RBI double to right field. The speedy Duggar rounded second, third, and slid home to make the score 7-5. The Commodores brought home another run in the top of the eighth as Gillikin drove an RBI single to right field, scoring White from second and making the score 7-6.

Hyannis pulled away  in the bottom of the eighth, scoring four more runs and forcing another error by Falmouth. Down 11-6 in the top of the ninth, Hale knocked a two-run homer over the right field fence. Unfortunately, that would not be enough to bring about another Commodores comeback, and the Commodores fell to the Harbor Hawks 11-8.

Hale continued his hitting streak from the previous Cotuit game into tonight’s game against Hyannis, batting three for five at the plate. Hale was a triple short of the cycle totaling one single, one double, a home run, and an RBI. Another player worth noting was Newman, who batted two for five. Newman recorded one single, one double, and one RBI against Hyannis.

The Commodores now hold a 12-11-2.5 record and hope to break their two-game losing streak tomorrow when they host Orleans. For more information, visit the Falmouth Commodores’ website at www.falmouthcommodores.com.
