PREVIEW: Falmouth Faces Brewster At Home

AnthemThe Falmouth Commodores (5-4) are in uncharted territory following a 1-0 loss to the Harwich Mariners. The team is facing a 3-game losing streak and tonight they send Jacob Godfrey to the mound hoping to get back in the winning column against the Brewster Whitecaps (5-4). It is the two teams first matchup of the season.

After a crazy first week where the roster was changing nearly every day, the group of talent on the Commodores has settled into a temporary rhythm. Players like Kevin Merrell (USF), Michael Gigliotti (Lipscomb), Cadyn Grenier (Oregon St.) and Bryce Johnson (Sam Houston St.) are seeing regular playing time and coach Trundy is able to keep a steady platoon behind the plate and at first base. Matt Duce (Dallas Baptist), Michael Cantu (Texas) and Tyler Lawrence (Murray St.) have all seen time at catcher and DH. The outfield is boosted with the addition of Ryan Chandler (Rice) and Trevor Larnach (Oregon St.)

Tonight, Jacob Godfrey (Arizona State University) looks to pick up his second win of the season after scraping off the rust against Hyannis on Tuesday. The righty threw five innings of scoreless ball and worked around a couple jams to earn the victory.

Brewster sends righty Walter Borkovich (Michigan State) to the bump for his first start of the season. The Whitecaps singed Borkovich on Saturday.

PITCHING VS POWER

Falmouth boasts the second-best team earned run average (1.79) in the Cape League and Brewster comes to town with the third-best team offense (.286 avg). The Commodores offense has seen its fair share of struggles (case and point in yesterday’s loss to Harwich) so a strong start from Godfrey is a must.

Godfrey will need to hold Matt Davis in check if he hopes for a solid performance. The power hitter from Virginia Commonwealth University is leading the Cape League in both home runs (4), runs batted in (12), and runs (12).

ROSTER MOVES

Falmouth signed and activated John Sparks from Austin Peavy University. Sparks had previously been on the Orleans Firebird’s roster before being released on Saturday. In the spring, Sparks threw 34.1 innings with a 1-2 record and 5.40 ERA in 5 starts (18 total appearances).

First pitch from Guv Fuller Field is scheduled for 6pm. Commodore Call Pregame Show, including our daily visit with Coach Trundy, starts at 5:45.
