Commodores come from behind to beat Orleans

The Falmouth Commodores (12-10) earned themselves a tough 6-3 win over the Orleans Firebirds (12-10), coming from behind twice.

The Firebirds were the first to get on the board, scoring twice in the second inning. After reaching first on a walk and advancing to second and third on a sac bunt and single, Chris Triano (Keystone College) was the first player to cross home plate, scoring on a wild pitch by Tyler Holton (Florida State). Scott Hurst (Cal St Fullerton) quickly followed scoring from second base on a single into left by Will Golsan (Ole Miss).

The Commodores were quick to respond, scoring one run in the bottom of the inning. Matt McLaughlin (U of Kansas) singled to right to drive in Michael Cantu (U of Texas) who was standing on second as a result of a single and fielding error by Orleans’ right fielder, Scott Hurst.

The Commodores tied it up, 2-2 in the third inning. JJ Matijevic (U of AZ) started off the inning with a walk, stole second, and advanced to third on a passed ball.  Josh Watson (TCU) brought Matijevic home with a sacrifice grounder.

The Firebirds took back the lead with a one-run fourth inning. Scott Hurst ending up on third base as a result of a walk, sac bunt, and passed ball.  Ethan Paul (Vanderbilt U) doubled to deep center, bringing home Hurst from third base.

Falmouth had a big sixth inning, bringing the score to 5-3. Tristan Gray (Rice U) hit a three-run shot over the wall in center. Gray’s home run brought home Josh Watson (TCU) and Willie Burger (Penn State), who both singled to get on base.

The Commodores rallied one last time in seventh, bringing the score to 6-3. Matt McLaughlin (U of Texas) hit a single into left field, bring home Tyler Lawrence (Murray State) from third.

Justin Hoyt (Jacksonville State) got the win for Falmouth and Kevin Smith (U of Georgia) was credited with the loss for Orleans.

Falmouth is on the road tomorrow against the Whitecaps. First pitch in Brewster is at 5PM!
