FALMOUTH, July 13, 2016- The Commodores dominated the Wareham Gatemen in a 12-3 outing on Fox College Sports night at Guv Fuller field.
The Gatemen wasted no time, taking 1-0 lead in the first inning. Lead-off batter Cole Freeman (LSU) got things started, finding a hole past the diving glove of Falmouth’s second baseman, Deacon Liput (U of Florida). The second batter of the game, Austen Wade (TCU), took a hard pitch to the chin when he squared to bunt. Wade will be fine but was taken out of the game for medical attention. Freeman advanced to third on a sacrifice and a stolen base. Gavin Sheets got the first RBI of the night, knocking in Freeman with a sacrifice fly to right.

The Commodores were quick to respond in the bottom of the inning. The speedy Michael Gigliotti (Lipscomb) led off with a double over the head of right fielder Robert Metz, the rising junior at George Washington, who had replaced Wade. After advancing on a sacrifice bunt by Liput, Gigliotti became the first Commodores to cross home plate. JJ Matijevic (U of Arizona) drove Gigliotti in with his first of three RBIs of the night.
The Gatemen took back the lead in the top of the second. A two out double put Joey Bartosic (George Washington) standing on second. The next batter, Cole Freeman (LSU) found a hole between third and short, driving in the go ahead run.
The Commodores responded again, in the bottom of the inning, with three runs. The first run of the inning is scored on a double by Gigliotti, through the legs of third basemen, Adrian Tovalin (Azusa Pacific). Liput, also, earned himself two RBIs, on an infield single.
The Commodores picked up another run in the third inning. Tyler Lawrence (Murray State) drove home Watson on a long ball down the third baseline. Watson stood on second after being walked and a balk.
The floodgates opened in the fourth inning for the Commodores, who scored five runs. JJ Matijevic got the first RBI of the inning, doubling off the diving arm of left fielder, Alex Destino (USC), to bring in Tristan Gray. The rising junior at Rice came in for Matt McLaughlin (U of Kansas), who took a hard ball off the leg to get on base. Gigliotti quickly followed Gray, reaching home on a fielder’s choice by Joshua Watson (TCU). Trevor Larnach (Oregon State) hit the third double of the inning to drive in Matijevic. Lawrence solidified the Commodores lead with a two run shot to left.
In the fifth, Matijevic hit a sacrifice fly ball to center field, bring home Gray who stood on third.
The Gatemen score one run in the seventh inning. Jonathan Engelmann (U of Michigan) came in from third on what was ruled as a passed ball.
Lawrence put up one more run for the Commodores in the eighth inning. The rising junior at Murray State University went deep for the second time of the night, in the eighth inning.
Cole Sands (Florida State) picked up his first win of the season. Sands recently returned from a ten-day stint with Team USA where he picked up a win against Taiwan. Wareham’s Dalton Horton was charged with the loss.
Tomorrow is an off day across the league, but on Friday the Commodores are back at it, going to Yarmouth. First pitch against the Y-D Red Sox is at 5PM!
