Cotuit killers Cameron Cannon, Davis Sims strike again

By: Greg Levinsky

FALMOUTH – Cameron Cannon is a model of consistency and is truly a staple of success against the Cotuit Kettleers. The Arizona rising junior and Falmouth Commodores third baseman swatted a home run and collected a pair of RBIs in Wednesday’s 8-3 win at Guv Fuller Field.

The slick-fielding Cannon is batting .268 on the summer and leads the Commodores (24-18-1) with 27 RBIs. In five contests against the Kettleers (21-18-4), He’s batting .455 (10-for-23) with a pair of doubles and home runs to go with 10 RBIs.

“We’ve seen them a lot throughout the year, the same pitchers over and over again,” Cannon said. “You learn new things and make adjustments.”

Cannon had a team season-high six RBIs when the Commodores put up a tied for league best scoring mark in a 17-7 win over the Kettleers on July 5. In that contest Davis Sims (Western Kentucky) blasted a pair of home runs. He did the same in the Falmouth Commodores final regular season home game.

Sims (2-for-2, 3 RBIs) also performs admirably against the Kettleers, batting .350 (7-for-20) with four home runs and seven RBIs.

“We just see it really well when we play them,” Sims said. “Everything clicks for the team when we play those guys. We always come out and try to win, and that’s what we did today.”

The Commodores have scored 40 runs over the past week, and Commodores head coach Jeff Trundy said it’s a product of his team finding comfort.

“Sometimes hitting comes and goes,” Trundy said. “Right now it’s here. A lot of kids that are hitting the ball now worked really, really hard this summer.”

Yale rising senior Scott Politz evened up his record at 2-2 in the penultimate regular season contest. Politz tossed 5.1 innings and scattered six hits while allowing two earned runs.

The Kettleers took a 2-0 lead in the second. They loaded the bases on a single and two walks with no outs in the second inning. Cannon made a back-handed stab on a grounder by Peyton Burdick (Wright State) and touched third base for a force out, but his throw home was just a moment late. Brady Smith (Florida) followed with an RBI single.

Back-to-back solo shots by Cannon and Sims tied it in the bottom of the frame. Sims blasted his tied for team-leading seventh homer, and Cannon followed with his second of the summer.

“Just getting jobs done,” Cannon said. “Find a way to get guys in to score.”

The Commodores made it 4-2 when Cannon followed a Matt Wallner (Southern Miss) sacrifice fly with one of his own in the third.

Another Sims sacrifice coupled with a two-out, two-run home run by Logan Davidson (Clemson) extended the lead in the fifth. Sims notched his team-leading eighth home run in the seventh.

The first of a home and home with the Kettleers that wraps up with the regular season finale tomorrow at 4:30 p.m. at Lowell Park in Barnstable, the Commodores are pulling for a spot to host their first round playoff series and look to end the season series in which they lead 4-0-1.

“Everything’s rolling, Everyone’s feeling great, and the most important thing is what coach Trundy preaches to us – having fun,” Sims said. When you’ve got everybody clicking on offense, defense and pitching, it makes everything a lot better.”

“If you’re having fun, you play that much better,” Trundy said.

Cannon summed it up succinctly.

“A lot of guys have confidence in themselves, and each other,” Cannon said.
