FALMOUTH – The Commodores were able to split a doubleheader against the Cape League’s top team, the Chatham Anglers.
Here’s what happened:
Game 1
Commodores outfielder Zach Deloach has been the hottest hitter for Falmouth and in game one against Chatham, his bat made the difference.
With one out and men on first and second, the Texas A&M Aggie hit an RBI-single walking off the Anglers, 3-2.
“I’ve just been seeing the fastball,” Deloach said. “I’m just looking to hit the heater and recognizing the pitch early in the count.”
Deloach continued his seven game hit streak with an offensive showcase. The ‘Dores right fielder went three-for-three including a solo home run, a walk and two RBIs.
The winning pitcher was Falmouth reliever Justin Wrobleski. The left-hander from Clemson threw two innings not allowing a single strikeout and tossing two strikeouts.
The losing pitcher was Chatham reliever Jack Owen. The right-hander from Auburn went two and one-third innings pitched giving up one run on four hits.
Falmouth starter Tyler Ras held the Anglers to two runs on four hits through five innings. The right-hander from Alabama also tossed three strikeouts and three walks.
The game stayed locked at two until the bottom of the seventh. The only other Commodore to earn a RBI was ‘Dores shortstop Kevin Kendall back in the second inning.
“We did a lot of things right,” manager Jeff Trundy said. “They balled all day long and it’s nice to be on that side of a walk-off victory.”

Game 2
Despite a late rally, featuring a two-RBI double by Falmouth designated hitter Blake Dunn and a solo shot from ‘Dores catcher Taylor Smith, the Commodores couldn’t capitalize as they fell to the Anglers, 6-5.
“It’s just how baseball works,” Commodores first baseman Jackson Coutts said. “We competed. We had the tying run at the plate. We weren’t totally out of it.”
Following the excitement of a walk-off victory, the ‘Dores offense laid dormant as Chatham’s Daniel Federman dazzled on the mound.
The Commodores could only muster two runs and four hits against the right-hander from Miami.
‘Dores first baseman Jackson Coutts was one positive for Falmouth. Following a Trei Cruz double, Coutts hit a triple erasing the ‘Dores’ goose egg scoring Cruz. The Rhody Ram went one-for-four with one RBI and scoring once.
“Once I saw the ball scooted away, I was like, “Okay, I got to go three here,'” Coutts said laughing. “Third base is pretty far so.”
Commodores second baseman Hayden Cantrelle contributed two hits against the Anglers.
Chatham had three consecutive innings, from the second to the fourth, where they scored two runs.
The Anglers line-up heated up when catcher Charlie Welch hit a two-run homer in the top of the second.
“You’re going to lose games in this league,” Trundy said. “To come back from four nothing is something that you want.”
The winning pitcher was Chatham starter Daniel Federman. The losing pitcher was Falmouth starter Robert Ahlstrom.
The southpaw from Oregon went two and two-thirds innings pitched allowing four runs on six hits.
Anglers reliever Dawson Merryman earned the save. This was the third save of the season for Merryman.
The Commodores (9-8-1) committed two errors against Chatham (13-7-1).
Up Next: The Commodores will face the Brewster Whitecaps 5 p.m. July 6 at Stony Brook Field.
“We just got to keep battling and that’s what we do,” Coutts said.
