Red hot Commodores route Firebirds for fifth straight win

FALMOUTH – The Falmouth Commodores have been one thing throughout these past five games: HOT.

Led by strong starting pitching from Chris Gonzalez and potent hitting, the Commodores outplayed the Firebirds, 3-1.

“We’re playing some pretty good baseball right now,” ‘Dores first baseman Steven Moretto said. “We are starting to grind more in our at-bats and the pitching is there.”

Moretto followed an RBI single by Baron Radcliff with a sacrifice-fly in the fourth inning extending Falmouth’s lead to two.

Radcliff finished with one hit in three at-bats while ‘Dores right fielder Zach Deloach tallied two hits in four at-bats.

Commodores starter Chris Gonzalez continues to find his rhythm and had run support in tonight’s ballgame. The southpaw from Stetson tossed six scoreless innings allowing five hits while tossing two strikeouts.

“I’m just finding myself on the mound,” Gonzalez said. “Early in the year I was struggling finding the zone. Now I’m attacking the zone early and getting ahead in counts.”

The winning pitcher was Falmouth starter Chris Gonzalez. The losing pitcher was Orleans reliever Angelo Smith. Commodores reliever Zach Brzykcy earned the save.

‘Dores relievers Brant Brown and Caleb Wurster threw one scoreless inning apiece.

Even though Orleans and Falmouth both had six hits, the Firebirds only scored once. In the top of the ninth, Orleans second baseman Shay Whitcomb slammed a solo home run for the first and only run for the Firebirds.

The one run for Orleans was charged to Zach Brzykcy.

Up Next: The Commodores will face the Brewster Whitecaps July 22 5 p.m. at Stony Brook Field.

“We are doing everything we can to win,” Moretto said. “It can be a grind showing up to the park everyday. We’re playing not for ourselves, we are playing for our team.”
