Red Sox vs. Orioles Opening Day features 2 Falmouth Commodores alumni players

Today is opening day for Major League Baseball (MLB). The Boston Red Sox will be playing the Baltimore Orioles at Fenway Park at 2:10PM, ET. The game will be aired on MASN 2 (BAL), NESN (BOS), and can be live streamed on fubo TV.

Two former Falmouth Commodore players, Kyle Gibson and Adley Rushman, are slated to play in the Baltimore Orioles opening day line-up. Kyle as a starting pitcher and Adley as his catcher. Adley Rutschman played college baseball for the Oregon State Beavers. He played with the Falmouth Commodores during the 2017 season. In 2018, Rutschman was named College World Series Most Outstanding Player and in 2019, Collegiate Baseball Player of the Year by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper.

The Orioles selected Ruschman with the first overall selection in the 2019 MLB draft, signing for $8.1million, the highest signing bonus at the time. In 2022, he was promoted to the major leagues and started as playing catcher. The Orioles were 12 games over .500 after Rutschman’s arrival to finish 83-79, a major-league-best 31-game improvement from 2021. Rutschman led the Orioles in wins above replacement and finished second in voting for the American League’s Rookie of the Year Award. He was also voted the winner of the 2022 Louis M. Hatter Most Valuable Oriole Award by members of the local media.

Kyle Gibson played for the Commodores in 2007, and was named as a Cape Cod Baseball League All-Star. Hailing from Indiana, he played college baseball for the Missouri Tigers. In 2009, the Minnesota Twins selected Gibson in the first round, 22nd overall. The Twins called Gibson to the major leagues in 2013. He opened the 2016 season as the Twins’ No. 2 starter. In 2019, Gibson signed a three-year contract with the Texas Rangers and was tapped for his first career opening day start in 2021. Gibson received his first All-Star Game selection in 2021, the year he was traded to the Philadelphia Phillies. He recorded his 1,000th career strikeout in his Phillies debut. In 2022, Gibson signed a one-year contract with the Baltimore Orioles.
