The Commodores put up a fight, but were not able to complete a comeback against the Brewster Whitecaps on Monday. The team made the most out of few hits, but the Brewster hitting proved too powerful for the Commodores.
In the bottom of the first inning the Whitecaps took a one run lead. The lead-off batter hit a line drive to right field, and a two out base hit brought in the run.
The Commodores got the run back in the second inning. Right fielder Heath Quinn (Samford) scored on a sacrifice fly from shortstop Tristan Gray (Rice).
The Whitecaps struck back in the bottom of third inning. With one out the Whitecaps hit a double, a single and a double, scoring two runs and advancing the score to 3-1.
The deficit was cut to one in the top of the seventh inning. Center fielder JB Woodman (Ole Miss), who got on base on a fielder’s choice, scored after his college teammate and third baseman Tate Blackman (Ole Miss) hit a line drive single to right field.
In the bottom of the seventh the Whitecaps threatened by loading the bases with no outs. Relief pitcher Jack Finnegan (McLennan Community College) was able to get the lead runner out at home and immediately drew a ground ball to force a double play and end the inning.
First baseman JJ Matejevic (Arizona) tied the game up in the bottom of the seventh with a line drive home run to right field. Matejevic has hit three home runs this season, and he has hit all three home runs against Brewster.
“I was just trying to keep the team in the game and do what I have to do to help the team win, unfortunately we didn’t today but that is how it goes,” said Matejevic.
In the bottom of the eighth the Whitecaps pulled ahead. A double to left center field with runners on first and second scored one run. A single to left field scored the second run to give the Whitecaps a 5-3 lead. The Commodores could not amass a comeback in the ninth, and the game ended by that 5-3 score.
The Commodores will try to end a two game skit on Tuesday against Orleans at home at 6:00. For more information about the Commodores, visit their website at http://www.falmouthcommodores.com.
