Following a rain-out of Saturday’s game against the Y-D Red Sox, the Falmouth Commodores (1-0) get back to action tonight against the Harwich Mariners (2-0).
Despite three Cape League games being rained out on Saturday, the Mariners managed to play their scheduled matchup against the Hyannis Harbor Hawks. They went on to a commanding 12-4 victory. Seven of the nine starting Mariners had RBI’s and four collected two apiece. Starting pitcher Patrick Naughton picked up the win by throwing five innings of four-run ball, scattering 11 hits and mowing down six Hyannis hitters for strikeouts.
No new rosters additions have been announced, so the Commodores continue to face depth issues in the outfield and infield. Prior to the rain-out, new Commodore Cadyn Grenier had been placed in the starting lineup at third base, batting seventh.
On the other side, head coach Jeff Trundy like the pitching depth they have right now, including 2015 returner Stephen Villines.
“We’ve got some flexibility there,” Trundy said. “Stephen was with us a year ago and I thought he looked very good [against Chatham].”
Jeff Trundy sends Lipscomp righty Jeffery Passantino to the mound for the home opener tonight. With Lipscomb, Passantino made 15 starts with a 6-5 record and a 3.40 ERA. He threw 98 innings, just 9.2 less than his fellow teammate, Brady Puckett pitched in the season opener against Chatham.
In 2015, Passantino was as Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American, on the Atlantic Sun All-Freshman Team and a Atlantic Sun Second Team All-Conference selection.
The probable starter for Harwich is Shane McCarthy from Seton Hall University. This spring, he threw over 100 innings, compiling a 2.38 ERA, six wins and a Big East All-Conference First Team selection. More notably, on April 15, 2016, he threw the first perfect game in Seton Hall history, mowing down 27 LUI-Brooklyn hitters on just 88 pitches in a 10-0 win.
First pitch at 5:30 with Commodore Call Pregame at 5:15.
